The Airship

Johnny B Cooper

Johnny  B.  Cooper  was  born  on  the  1st  of  April  1967  in   Czechoslovakia.  At  the  age  of  nine  his  passion  for  music  began,  with   his  older  sister  -‐  who  was  listening  to  music  that  was  hard  to  access   due  to  the  political  situaHon  -‐  as  his  first  “teacher”.  Having  first  been   beguiled  by  the  Pop  sensibiliHes  of  ABBA  and  The  Beatles,  he  soon   moved  on  to  acts  like  Deep  Purple,  Yes,  Rush,  Uriah  Heep,  Led   Zeppelin  and  Jethro  Tull.

Having  performed  in  bands  as  a  young  man,  he  soon  found  there  was   no  place  in  Socialist  Czechoslovakia  to  be  a  professional  musician,  and   put  his  ambitions  on  hold  for  twenty  years. In  the  meantime  his  country  has  completely  changed……. He  bought  his  first  electric  guitar  in  September  2014  and  his  own   music  and  lyrics  soon  flowed.  The  result?  His  first  song  –  “The   Airship“.

The  story  of  the  song  “The  Airship” The  genesis  of  “The  Airship”  began  in  1987  with  Johnny  writing  lyrics   in  his  native  language.  Twenty  years  later,  armed  with  his  newly-honed  guitar  skills,  his  mind  was  full  of  different  words  to  accompany   them  -‐  including  “The  Airship”.  With  a  few  tweaks  and  a  translaHon   into  English,  they  suddenly  took  on  a  whole  new  dimension.

What  started  out  as  a  demo  in  a  recording  studio  in  Brno,  Czech   Republic  soon  caught  the  ear  of  London-based  Songwriter-Producer   Steven  Williams  (Sting,  Gary  Barlow,  Britney  Spears,  Lisa  Stansfield,   Eric  Clapton),  who  arranged  a  fully-evolved  version  supported  by   world-class  musicians  in  his  Wimbledon  studio.   It  took  many  weeks  full  of  discussions,  colletive  hard  work  and   countless  rehearsals  to  produce  the  wonderful,  melancholic  and   dreamy  version  of  “The  Airship”  that  is  now  ready  to  be  enjoyed  by   the  masses. The  Airship  is  ready  to  launch,  let’s  see  where  it  takes  us...
